1. Purpose
This Child Protection Policy outlines Mecin’s commitment to safeguarding children from all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence. It aligns with the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and reflects Mecin’s cultural values and mission to protect and empower vulnerable children in Tanzania.
2. Guiding Principles
Mecin upholds the following core principles:
- Best Interests of the Child: All decisions and actions prioritize the safety, dignity, and development of the child.
- Zero Tolerance for Abuse: Mecin does not tolerate any form of physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological abuse.
- Participation and Respect: Children have the right to express their views and be heard in matters affecting them.
- Non-Discrimination: All children are treated equally regardless of gender, ability, ethnicity, religion, or background.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Mecin integrates traditional values and practices—such as ceremonial welcomes and community rhythms—while ensuring child safety and inclusion.
3. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All Mecin staff, volunteers, board members, and consultants
- Partner organizations and donors engaging directly with children
- Visitors attending Mecin events or programs involving children
4. Definitions
- Child: Any person under the age of 18
- Abuse: Any action or inaction that causes harm or potential harm to a child
- Safeguarding: Measures taken to protect children from harm and promote their well-being
5. Code of Conduct
All individuals working with or around children must:
- Treat children with respect and dignity at all times
- Avoid physical punishment, verbal abuse, or degrading treatment
- Never engage in sexual activity or inappropriate behavior with a child
- Obtain informed consent before taking photos or sharing stories involving children
- Report any concerns or violations immediately to the designated Child Protection Officer
6. Recruitment and Screening
Mecin ensures that:
- All staff and volunteers undergo background checks and reference verification
- Child protection responsibilities are clearly outlined in contracts and orientation
- No individual with a history of child abuse or misconduct is permitted to work with children
7. Reporting and Response
Any suspicion, allegation, or incident of child abuse must be reported to:
